Valentine resigns from SA, takes IFC

By Greg Rivara

Student Association Sen. Jim Valentine resigned from his senate position Monday after being elected president of the Interfraternity Council Nov. 22.

Valentine is the fourth senator to resign from the senate this semester.

Valentine, alumni board treasurer of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, verbally resigned to SA Senate Speaker Joe Annunzio. Annunzio will submit Valentine’s resignation to the SA for approval during Sunday’s meeting.

Valentine said he ran for IFC president because the senate has not been effective this semester.

“The senate is not cooperating with each other. There are too many factions that are causing the arguing to go back and forth,” he said.

The difference between this semester’s senate and last semester’s senate is the number of issues the SA addressed, Valentine said. In the senate last semester, senators in opposing voting groups would debate an issue, but would not interfere with passing the issue, he said.

“This semester’s senators keep going around and around when an issue is dead or it is clear which way the issue is going,” Valentine said.

“I’m tired of spinning our wheels all the time,” he said.

Valentine said the SA executives are not challenging the senators enough, which is contributing to the senate’s ineffectiveness.

The IFC provides an opportunity to accomplish more goals for NIU and offers an opportunity to see the results of your work, he said.

Annunzio said, “I think the senate is going to be at a great loss without the representation of Senator Jim Valentine. But the contributions he has made to the senate won’t be forgotten and will be carried over to the Interfraternity Council.”
