Deaf group to perform signed version of movie

The entertainment fad known as “lip-sync” will take a bit of a twist this week as the “sign-sync” versions of assorted musical selections from the movie “Grease” will be presented.

The “sign-sync” presentation, entitled “Hear’s Grease,” will be presented by NIU’s program for the hearing impaired.

Tami Bosserman, director of the production, said the “sign-sync” production will ” help bridge the gap between those students who can hear and those who can’t—even if it helps just a little.”

The production will take place on Thursday in the Holmes Student Center’s Diversions lounge and will begin at 9 p.m. Admission to the production is free. The group, half of which are hearing impaired, will “sign-sync,” dance and act out selected songs from the movie that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. The theme will match that of the movie, with the performers and Diversions changed to resemble the 1950s. Bosserman said the production should be fun and very unique, but it will also serve a more practical purpose, she emphasized.

“We really want to promote deaf awareness,” Bosserman said. “Most people can’t and don’t realize what it is like to wake up in the morning without being able to hear an alarm clock. Most people don’t realize what it is like to not be able to hear the door bell ring or hear their telephone ring.

“We want less separation between the hearing and the deaf,” she said. “Something like this will help. This production might be able to show that hearing and deaf people can work together just a little more.”
