Men’s swim team competes tonight
November 16, 1988
Almost one year ago, the NIU men’s swimming and diving team defeated the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers at Milwaukee, Wis. One year later the Huskies will try it again, but at DeKalb.
NIU hosts Milwaukee for a 6 p.m. contest today at the Anderson Hall Pool. The Huskies enter tonight’s match with a perfect 3-0 slate.
Last season, NIU depended on its squad’s depth to secure a very narrow dual-meet victory. If the past weekend is any indication of the Huskies’ depth, then the swimming crew may have no problems today.
On Friday, NIU coach Dave Clark saw his team win in two separate locations. One half of the squad racked up a 66-38 victory in Cedar Falls, Iowa, by defeating Northern Iowa. The other half, left behind because of tests and other class conflicts, followed up with a 148-77 triumph over University of Chicago at Anderson Hall pool.
At the Iowa contest the Huskies lost the opening 400-yard medley relay race, but they proceeded to take blue ribbons in the next seven events, including six one-two finishes.
Randy Faherty and George Brooker were double-winners for the Huskies as Faherty ruled the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard version as well. Brooker captured the 1,000 yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
In DeKalb, NIU won the opening 400-yard medley relay and also claimed the next six events, including five one-two finishes. Against Chicago, Tom South and Bryan Hanania were double winners. South won the 200-yard and 500-yard version while Hanania was ruling both the one- and three-meter boards.
