Vote for Con Con

I am shocked that The Northern Star is advocating a NO vote on whether a Constitutional Convention should be called.

A YES vote on the Con Con issue is one possible way to avoid the seemingly never-ending spiral of tuition increases. The changes proposed by a Constitutional Convention could include increased funding for higher education.

Has the editorial board of the Star FORGOTTEN who its readers are? Students, educators and staff of a state university that has been forced to cut enrollment and increase tuition because the legislature refuses to properly fund higher education. The DeKalb area has lost millions this year because of the decreased enrollment which be scaled back more in the future.

What students and The Northern Star must understand is, politicians act consistent with ONE PURPOSE only. That purpose is: TO GET ELECTED.

Real reform is unpopular and must come from the people.

As to the cost of the Con Con, according to Patrick Quinn, a Con Con supporter, the last Con Con cost $14 million because a special election was called. In this case, the vote could be done during a regular election, reducing the cost to about $5 million.

So far, the opposition to the Con Con has raised about $500,000 to fight the issue. Supporters include powerful companies and utilities.

The question is: What are they afraid of?

Answer: The people.

VOTE YES ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION.
