Let minors in bars
October 12, 1988
In response to the Oct. 4 column by Marianne Renner, I was thoroughly appalled. Ms. Renner’s column was filled with repetition. She gave the top five reasons for not allowing minors into the bars, and as I read, I found reasons one and two saying that minors would drink and reasons three and four saying there would be overcrowding. Therefore, I only see three reasons.
I also found it amazing that Ms. Renner automatically assumed that most 18-year-olds would be throwing up. Yes, there may be a few, but tell me there are never people over 21 who get sick. And the last time I checked, the term minor included everyone under the age of 21 not just the 18-year-olds which the column focused on.
As far as reasons to allow minors into bars, I can think of several. The first is to play darts. Unless it’s in a bar, I can’t seem to find many places to play darts. Another is to dance. If anyone has noticed, it also seems that some of the better local bands play at none other than, yes, the bars. And believe it or not, some people do go out to just socialize. Now I’ve been to many parties this year, and I can’t say that any of the parties have been able to offer all of these options at once like a bar can.
I think that Ms. Renner should use a little more discretion herself before she starts calling minors pee-wees. Think back a few years Ms. Renner!
