Regents to discuss HSC renovations, pay increases

The Board of Regents will meet Wednesday at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal to discuss salary increases for university administrators and further action on the rehabilitation of the Holmes Student Center tower’s exterior walls.

NIU Student Regent Nick Valadez will propose new business to the board’s Facilities and Finance Committee. He said he will suggest that Regents develop a policy addressing salary increases for university administrators. Valadez said administrators should not be allowed a higher salary increase than what is available to university faculty percentage-wise.

The board also will address the HSC recladding project, which was approved by the board in March. The total budget approved for the project is $1,995,000.

NIU President John LaTourette’s report to the board states that because the bids received exceeded the budgeted amount, the architects are investigating alternative construction materials and methods.

Valadez said there will be discussion on “where we are going to go from here.

“The actual cost for the tower remodeling is estimated at $2.6 million. The estimated figure that the architects first gave us in March is drastically off,” he said.

The actual figure is about twice as much as the given estimate, he said.

Another capital improvement project listed in LaTourette’s report is the completion of the smoke detection system in NIU residence halls.
