Candidates vie for coroner’s office

Platform: Miller said he wants to keep the public abreast with the office of coroner. Through public involvement, the office of coroner can keep the public aware of problems like alcohol and drug related deaths, Miller said. Miller said his office has helped initiate a program educating high school students and civic organizations on the effect of alcohol and drug abuse while driving. Miller says the program has become a model for the nation.
Miller also wants to establish a state-wide training program for coroners and their assistants. The program would better outline responsibilities of the professions and would allow for a channel of communication throughout the state, Miller said.
Miller said the job of coroner is not an easy one. He said his knowledge of investigative techniques, forensic medicine and administrative skills will prove to be his stong points.
Background: Miller is currently coroner for DeKalb County. He has held the position for five years. Prior to being coroner, Miller served as deputy coroner for five years.
Miller trained under the guidance of Bill Sullivan, who served as coroner before Miller. “I have trained under the best there are,” Miller said.
Miller is vice president of the Illinois Coroner’s Association, a member of the Sandwich Lions Club and a Sandwich Jaycee.
Miller has attended forensic death seminars, annual vehicular homicide seminars, American Academy of Forensic Sciences seminars and is a graduate of Wayne State University Medical and Legal Death Investigations seminars.
