Field hockey squad grabs Midewest title

Behind the strong offensive attack of freshman Laura Wehrman, the NIU field hockey squad captured the title at the Midwest Independent Championships Friday through Sunday at the St. Louis Soccer Park.

Out of NIU’s six goals in the Huskies’ 3-0 victory over Southern Illinois in the semi-finals, Wehrman scored four points and assisted one. NIU went on to defeat host St. Louis in the championship game by a score of 3-1. The Huskies ended their season with a 15-3-1 slate.

“The team really played hard both games this weekend, and the seniors made the most out of their last games,” NIU coach Laurie Bell said.

Senior Mary Fike, a defender for the Huskies, and Anne Marie Roozendaal were selected to the championships’ All-Tournament Team. Roozendaal played a key role in this year’s squad. The freshman tallied 52 points on 22 goals with eight assists for the season.

“Laura was there when we needed her (yesterday),” Bell said. “This was a nice way to end the season.”

NIU comes back to DeKalb only to wait for the final Division I Coaches Poll that comes out Nov. 1, with hopes of picking up an at-large bid to the NCAA Post-Season Tournament.
