DUI accident to be staged
October 19, 1988
A “two-car accident” complete with blood, injuries, dead bodies and arrests will be staged Friday at 11:50 a.m. outside the Holmes Student Center on Carroll Avenue.
The mock disaster is being presented by the American Red Cross and NIU’s BACCHUS chapter as part of National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week. BACCHUS stands for Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students.
Joanna Deuth of Health Enhancement Services said six BACCHUS members will participate in the accident as victims and DUI offenders. As part of the presentation, the DeKalb police and fire departments and the University Police will participate in a mock rescue and in mock police procedures including roadside sobriety tests and two DUI arrests.
In the original plans for the accident, a helicopter was scheduled to rescue one of the accident victims. However, since a helicopter landing cannot be made in the area of the disaster, it will hover around the accident overhead, Deuth said.
In addition, Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Coghlan and and DeKalb County Coroner Dennis Milller will speak at the presentation, Deuth said.
