Field hockey team wins

While the NIU field hockey team (10-2-1) defeated Michigan 4-3 Sunday, coach Laurie Bell was not real impressed with the victory.

“It was a win, but it wasn’t pretty,” Bell said.

After just 25 seconds of play, Michigan slipped in an early goal to take a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later Anne Marie Roozendaal took an unassisted shot from the inner circle to tie the game. Roozendaal continued the scoring with another shot from the circle to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead.

NIU increased the margin when Roozendaal attempted a center pass to teammate Regina Vanderwerf, but the pass was more of a curving shot that landed in the goal.

Michigan scored with 28 minutes left in the half, slicing the Huskie lead to 3-2 as the first frame ended.

In the second half the Huskies continued to pressure the Michigan defense, unloading 15 shots to Wolverine goalie Gillian Piper.

Seven minutes into the second half, a Huskie penalty corner led to a Jady Psek goal. Roozendaal tried to hook in a shot, but it ricochetted off the outer edge of the goal and was then slapped in by Psek to give the Huskies a 4-2 lead.

With three minutes remaining, Colleen Preston went one-on-one with Wolverine forward Margaret Kundtz. Kundtz’s first shot rebounded off the knee pads of Preston, scoring the goal.
