Don’t discriminate against freshmen
September 14, 1988
I may be a freshman, which in turn makes one assume that I have a fully biased opinion. I will, though, support my facts and oppositions fully, unlike the author of “Freshman Needn’t Bring Cars.” I’ll simply call the author “Jed” to simplify this note. Jed did show me that he obviously did not pass the ENG 103, 104, 105 sequence whatsoever, and if Jed knew how badly he contradicted himself, he might have had a decent editorial. Jed also showed no support for his assumptions and by all means was totally biased in opinion. I just got out of a “blow-off” senior year, and had bad English grades, but I can at least recognize a great incompetency in Jed’s editorial. He had one intention—disrespect—disrespect for a freshman; something he must not have experienced.
I have many points to bring up for my cause, and many points against Jed. First, in Jed’s editorial, he points out that freshman use the lots for weekday storage. If Jed has a car: (the following refer to Jed’s automobile).
. Does he drive his car to class everyday of the week, or does he use weekday storage?
2. Does he drive around town everyday after class?
3. What does Jed use his car for everyday?
Jed is just as guilty for using the lot for weekday storage as any freshman at NIU. Just because he is other than a freshman, he thinks he has more rights to park his car at this university. Where does it say in the “commandments” of parking that you can’t park here during the week and go home on weekends (which many students do). I, being a freshman, should have the same privilege to park here, so why can’t Jed cool it. He is just a prejudiced censored word.
Secondly, Jed points out that freshman get in trouble more often when they bring cars to campus. How do the freshman get into trouble if they go home on weekends and they use parking spaces for what amounts to weekday storage and don’t go out during the week. I can go on and on about how bad the editorial is. Jed should just get his head out of his editorial and realize the problem. We just need more parking. Why discriminate against first year students when the people making the decisions parked here as freshman.
