Fight sanctions to be discussed

The Sigma Pi fraternity house will receive sanctions today for a fight in the spring between some of its members and members of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house.

Jeff Cufaude, activities adviser for University Programming and Activities, said, “It is difficult to say what the sanctions will be because the participation varied from each house.”

Jerry Melligan, Sig Pi chapter president, said he believes his house will not receive any sanctions. He said the university put Sig Pi’s on probation for the summer, but he said today’s meeting should end the probation.

Barbara Henley, NIU associate vice president for student affairs, will attend the meeting today. She said she has not reviewed all the material concerning the fight and could not comment on possible sanctions Sig Pi’s would receive.

Cufaude said he met with Henley, Sig Eps Undergraduate Adviser Steve Coloia and a Sig Eps national chapter member Aug. 26. Sig Eps is on a probationary status for the fall 1988 semester and educational programs will be implemented for its members which Cufaude will attend.

Melligan said Sig Eps claims several members of Sig Pi jumped several Sig Eps members. He denied the Sig Eps’ claim and said on May 12, about 40 members of Sig Eps, carrying bats, paddles and other weapons, barged into the Sig Pi house and started beating up people.

Between seven and 12 men were in the Sig Pi lobby who were “beat up really bad,” Melligan said. One member, who was in the lobby, received 17 stitches from being hit on his head.

After the fight, “blood stains were up and down our white hallways,” Melligan said. The hallways were recently painted, he said.

“It was pretty sickening. I never heard of anything like that happening before,” Melligan said. Fraternities have fought before but never with weapons and never with the intent to seriously injure someone, he said.

Because of the fight, Sig Pi’s front door and lock, a 6 feet by 3 feet double-paned window and two mailboxes were broken, Melligan said. He said the house is trying to be reimbursed for the door (not including the lock) totaling about $165, the window totaling about $260 and the mailboxes totaling about $35 each.

Melligan said he does not understand why Sig Pi’s was put on probation when they did not retaliate. He said, “What happened is ridiculous.

“It’s hard to believe they (Sig Eps) just received sanctions for a semester, then it’s over.” Melligan said he believes Sig Eps’ sanctions should be more severe. “It’s ridiculous they (Sig Eps) still exist.”
