Leaky pipe damages HSC office

A damaged pipe located in the Holmes Student Center caused an undetermined amount of damage to the Students’ Legal Assistance Office after springing two leaks in a two-week period.

Conrad Miller, physical plant administration and support service manager, said, “In the near past we did have a sewage line plugged up (in the HSC).” He said the pipe was located above the Legal Assistance Office located on the lower level of the student center.

Lynn Richards, student legal aid attorney, said that on Aug. 26, a small leak formed in her office. The leak was temporarily stopped. On Aug. 29, sewage water began leaking heavily from the ceiling surrounding the light in her office. Miller said $1,000 was spent to restore Richards’ office.

Richards said that at about 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, another small leak began to drip from the ceiling of the legal assistance office, and by 10:15 a.m., hot water began pouring from the ceiling tiles.

William Herrmann, acting student center director, said plumbers determined there was a hole in one of the drain pipes that transports kitchen sewage away from the Pow Wow Room located on the first floor of the student center. Miller said the pipe was temporarily patched to stop the water from leaking.

“The sewer line will be replaced next Monday because we have to shut down the water to the Pow Wow (in order to repair the pipe,” Miller said. The job will take about six hours, so work will begin early in the morning, he said. Breakfast will be served Monday in the Pow Wow, but the serving lines will be shut down for the rest of the day.

The cost to repair the first pipe was about $90, and the second repair, scheduled for Monday, will cost about $500 in materials and labor, Miller said.
