NIU student dies in accident
September 18, 1988
NIU Student Karri Botz, 17, described by friends as “bouncy and energetic,” was killed in a motorcycle-pedestrian collision on Annie Glidden Road, just north of Crane Drive, Saturday at 1:20 a.m.
DeKalb police report Botz was crossing Annie Glidden westbound, outside of the crosswalk, when she was struck by a southbound motorcycle on the inside lane.
Police report Botz then fell into the northbound inside lane where she was struck by an automobile driven by Hent House, 24, of Monroe Center. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:19 a.m. by Deputy Coroner William Engstrom.
Botz, a freshman pre-business major from Des Plaines, lived at 751 Grant Towers North.
Jennifer Harrison, Botz‘ floormate, said Botz, her roommate and two other friends were walking home from a party in the Greek Row area when Botz was killed.
Harrison, who was not present at the incident, said Botz’ friends thought because she was walking about a foot-and-a-half away from them, Botz either turned around or dropped something in the street when the incident collision with the motorcycle occurred.
Margie Britton, the driver of a car which was behind the auto which struck Botz, said, “I saw the car in front of me slam on the brakes and I saw a motorcycle skidding the wrong way.
“Then I saw a girl being dragged under the car—just her feet. The car drove up the side of the curb and I saw the girl lying in the street. She was dead.”
Britton said her boyfriend, who was a passenger in her car, went to an apartment to call the police.
A floormate of Botz‘ said she was unsure whether Botz and her friends had been drinking.
“Karri was not the type to get really drunk,” Harrison said.
The floormate described Botz as “really friendly.”
“She wanted to get to know everyone. She was bouncy and energetic,” she said.
Harrison said, “She was the first person I knew here. She was a really nice, quiet person. She always was concerned about other people’s problems.”
Britton said she did not see what happened to the motorcycle driver. The motorcycle was driven by Christopher Hennessy, 24, of Park Ridge. Hennessy was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital by the Dekalb Fire Department where he was treated and released.
DeKalb police reports said Hennessy was arrested for not having correct classification to operate a motorcycle.
Police are investigating the incident.
