Field hockey sweeps out east coast with four wins

NIU’s field hockey squad left the east coast clean over the weekend after a three-day, four match sweep.

The Huskies’ winning ways began on Friday by defeating American University 5-0. On Saturday, Richmond and Loyola College fell prey to the Huskies 1-0 and 5-1, respectively. Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Georgetown made it a perfect weekend win wise. NIU’s slate is now 5-2.

Against AU, freshman Anne Marie Roozendaal scored four of NIU’s five goals. The first goal came unassisted with less than a minute gone. She scored her second, aided by Anne Zalewski, with 5:26 before intermission. Julie Teaman assisted senior Mary Fike for the third Huskie goal with 7:30 gone in the second half. Roozendaal’s final two goals came at 9:07 and 10:18, respectively. Zalewski and Laura Wehrman each assisted Roozendaal.

“Anne had a real good game,” NIU coach Laurie Bell said. “She probably had her best game yet against America. Fike also had a tremendous game. Cecile Benitez came off the bench and played well. Everybody contributed and played well.”

During the Loyola match on Saturday, Roozendaal and Wehrman each added two goals for NIU while Lisa Sorrentino made the fifth. The only goal against Richmond came at 1:20 in the second half by Wehrman.

Senior All-America goalie candidate Colleen Preston picked up her fourth shutout this season with the Huskies’ 4-0 win over Georgetown. Sorrentino and Roozendaal both scored in the first half for the Huskies. Sorrentino connected again in the second half with 18:02 gone while Wehrman made the last shot with 22:50.

“We looked a little tired and slow, but still got the job done today,” Bell said after Sunday’s game. “We looked much better in the second half, but I think playing so many games in three days was beginning to wear on us.”
