Investigation of murder still underway in DeKalb

The Aug. 21 stangulation of DeKalb resident Lisa Garretson is still “under investigation” by the DeKalb police, who report no new information about the case.

Sgt. Chuck Kross, who is heading the investigation, said that after interviewing more than 100 people, the police have obtained suspects in the murder. However, he would not release the number of suspects involved in the case.

Garretson, 26, was found dead in her 110 State St. apartment about 9:40 p.m. Police said after she was strangled, her apartment was set on fire by use of an accelerant. Police would not report what type of accelerant was used to start the fire.

Although police have ruled out robbery as a motive in Garretson’s death, no other motives have been eliminated, Kross said.

At an Aug. 26 press conference, police said pathologist reports revealed that semen was found in Garretson’s body. Although police are not assuming a rape occurred before her death, they are “keeping that avenue open,” Kross said.

Police also reported that drugs were not involved in the murder, although some quantities of cocaine and cannibis were found at Garretson’s apartment.

Garretson’s last personal contact was a telephone conversation with a friend at about midnight Aug. 20, Kross said.

She graduated from NIU in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Garretson worked full-time at Cardinal Glass, 1651 State St, and part-time as a waitress at a local country club.
