NIU golfers finish 13th at Purdue

The NIU women’s golf squad didn’t have the lady luck it needed at the Lady Northern Intercollegiate Invitational hosted by Purdue Friday through Sunday. The Huskies finished the three-day tourney with a 992 score for an “unlucky” 13th place.

Threes seemed to plague NIU. The team didn’t stray from around the 330 mark all weekend. Opening day, the Huskies found themselves with a 333 tally which was followed by Saturday’s 331 total. NIU improved to a 328 on Sunday, but it was not enough to move the Huskies out of the middle of the pack.

Indiana toured the 6,423-yard, par 72 course in 299-311-304 for a 914 winning score. The Hoosiers were followed in order by Ohio State, 934; Minnesota, 941; Missouri, 956; Iowa, 969; Purdue, 971; Western Kentucky, 974; Illinois, 975; Wisconsin, 980; Illinois State, 983; Iowa State, 988; Michigan, 989; Northern Illinois, 992; Michigan State, 1001; Southern Illinois, 1002; Bowling Green State, 1031; DePauw, 1061; Indianapolis, 1063; Notre Dame, 1098; Ferris State, 1141; and Franklin College with a two-round total of 791 before withdrawing for the last round.

Freshman Nicole Jeray led all NIU players with a 246 three-round total. She received individual scores of 87-81-78.

“I was thrilled with Nicole’s 78 today,” NIU coach Pam Tyska said. “Her 87 the first round kept her from a good total. She really worked hard and had a good short game this weekend.

“The bright light for us in this tournament was that our younger players were able to maintain. We didn’t move mountains this weekend, but we held our own.”

NIU returns to play Friday and Saturday at the Michigan State University Lady Spartan Invitational at East Lansing, Mich.

The tournament medalist was Jen Meyers of Indiana. She hit rounds of 76, 76 and 72 for a 224 finish.
