Facts misinterpreted

First of all many thanks for the kind words regarding the national recognition received recently by the Office of Sports Information in the July 13 Star.

However, a few of the things I said to Tom Clegg were, I believe, misinterpreted—particularly in regards to the University of Notre Dame’s Associated Sports Information Director John Heisler.

Believe me, John Heisler ranks among the shining young stars in the sports information profession. He wins more national awards in one year than I have probably received in my entire 15-year career at NIU. What I said to Tom was that it was “great to compete on a national level with someone such as John Heisler.”

The College Sports Information Directors of America writing contests turn out to be kind of an “equalizer” allowing major institutions such as a NIU to enter competition with major-majors (Notre Dame and Big Ten institutions as an example).

This parity does not happen in the publications contests due to the differences in schools’ budgets. For Notre Dame’s Football Media Guide literally is “a book of mythical lore.” In 1986, the Fighting Irish book featured 272 pages, perfect binding, the “Four Horsemen,” etc., etc. It is a great publication. I refer to it often with the highest professional regard.

Again, thanks much for the recognition. On behalf of the university, this office is proud to accept such honors. At the same time we did not want to impugn the reputation of Notre Dame’s Office of Sports Information or John Heisler.
