CPR class scheduled

A one-day training session to teach adult cardiopulminary resuscitation and how to treat choking victims is scheduled for July 20 at the Student Recreation Center.

Registration is at the rec center during regular business hours, or by mail until July 15. No phone registrations will be accepted for the $10 sessions.

Recreation coordinator Alicia Cosky said the program is sponsored by the DeKalb County CPR Coordinating Committee.

Committee members are volunteers “who are concerned about the quality of CPR courses … and are not affiliated with any organization.

Cosky said the program began in March to meet the demand of rec center student employees who were “required to get CPR certification but did not know where to sign up for classes.”

All instructors have a CPR certificate which they must update each year by teaching at least two classes per year, Cosky said. Each class can have no more than six students in it, she said.

Cosky said although most people sign up on an individual basis, group requests also are accepted if the group is willing to go to the rec center. Each instructor handles no more than six students, she said.

Volunteers are on call to teach classes as well, Cosky said.

As classes fill up, more volunteers will be called to instruct them, she said.
