Another pretrial set for reckless homicide case

Another pretrial was set for March 21 for the case of Demetrius Glenn, 20, who is charged with reckless homicide in connection with the death of NIU student Christine Billmyer.

Assistant State’s Attorney Duke Harris said the judge set another pretrial because both Glenn’s attorney and Harris need to further consult with sources.

Harris said he needs to contact DeKalb Police for further information regarding the case and attorney Robert Carlson said he needs to speak with Glenn.

Glenn already has had at least two pretrial hearings at which a judge listens to the assistant state’s attorney and to Glenn’s attorney. The judge then determines if the case is ready for trial.

The judge found Monday the case is not ready for trial. At the next pretrial, the judge will either determine the case is ready and assign a trial date, or he will set another conference trial date.

At a previous status trial, Glenn’s attorney discussed an alternative program to a jail sentence. Glenn might be eligible for a drug rehabilitation program if he is proved to have a drug dependence.

Glenn also was charged with DUI, driving on a revoked license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. These charges came about Oct. 4, 1987 after the vehicle in which Billmyer was a passenger was struck at the intersection of Annie Glidden Road and Lincoln Hwy.

Three others in the vehicle also were injured.

The maximum sentence for reckless homicide is five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
