UPs arrest student suspects
March 31, 1988
Two more suspects were arrested in connection with a March 23 theft when tires, wheel rims and stereo equipment were stolen from cars parked in parking lots near NIU residence halls.
University Police Sgt. Ralph Taylor said Kishwaukee Community College students Fredrick Brown, 20, and Darron Malone, 21, both of Chicago, turned themselves in March 28 and were charged with two counts of burglary.
The two were seen walking near the area where the thefts occurred the night of the incident and were stopped by UPs prior to the arrest of two others, Taylor said.
The incident occurred when a patrol car drove into the parking lot east of Grant Towers North and noticed a car missing all tires and rims.
Later that evening, another vehicle was found in the same condition in parking lot P, west of the Stevenson Tower complex.
Police also found a car with a broken window and missing stereo equipment. A vehicle driving out of the lot was seen and stopped by UPs, who then arrested two Kishwaukee Community College students and confiscated stereo equipment from the car.
The tires and rims have not yet been located, but Taylor said UPs have an idea of their location.
A burglary charge constitutes a Class II felony and is probational for up to four years. The sentence could include three to seven years in the penitentiary and a maximum $10,000 fine, Assistant State’s Attorney Duke Harris said.
