Public Works Dept. to present program

DeKalb’s Department of Public Works will present a $2.5 million five-year road maintenance program to the city council at a special meeting tonight at 7.

Ralph Tompkins, assistant director of public works and engineering services, said he will present a proposal of certain streets which he has decided need maintenance during fiscal 1989 and how the streets should be maintained. He said he will ask the council to approve his decisions.

Tompkins said his proposal will be only for maintenance projects because reconstruction of curbs and gutters requires more plans, work and money.

Most streets will require two to three inches of blacktop overlaying, which will last about 12 to 15 years, Tompkins said. Other processes, such as crack-filling or seal-coating, will last about five to seven years, he said.

The streets Tompkins will propose to the council for fiscal 1989 maintenance for will be “a mix of streets,” he said. Most will be cement, concrete or blacktop roads, because brick roads require total reconstruction, he said.

Tompkins said he will present the program in the DeKalb Municipal Building’s Conference Room.
