What effect does a new tower at the Holmes Student Center have on NIU?

Is it supposed to impress the students and faculty or give some modern prestige to the campus? The school was courteous enough to ask us to vote on which tower design we liked best and how much we were willing to let them spend on it, but we were never asked if we felt a new tower was necessary.

From what we’ve read in the paper, we don’t feel that a new tower is needed and that most students would agree with us. Granted, the existing tower does need some repair, but wasn’t it enough to spend all that time and money repairing it last semester? Is the tower so bad that a complete overhaul is needed and, if it is, how come we haven’t heard about it until now? Most students would rather have their tuition costs kept down rather than having their money budgeted toward building a new tower.
