Men’s golfers tour hits Sunshine State

The Florida heat hasn’t improved or worsened the performance of the NIU men’s golf team.

The Huskies duplicated Monday’s 314 score on Tuesday, to cap a 628 composite for a sixth-place tie with Skidmore in the 54-hole Florida Citrus Bowl Classic Tournament.

The final 18 holes of the 12-team tournament will be played Wednesday at the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course, in predicted sunny and clear weather conditions.

“Our spirits are good, but physically we’re playing tired,” said NIU boss Jack Pheanis. “We’re just not as sharp as we’re capable of being. Hopefully, we’ll finish with a real solid 18 holes.”

Rick Stewart and Mike Briggs lead all Huskies with 156 strokes each, holding 76-80 and 77-79 scores respectively. Brian King and Charlie Sloan share a 159 score, carding 79-80 and 75-84 respectively. Derrick Strand finishes NIU scoring with a 163, scoring 83-80.

The host of the tourney—Central Florida—remains in first place with a 588 composite score, followed by opposing native Florida Atlantic, who holds a 606 two-day score. Hartford (609), Jacksonville (611) and Georgia State (615) remain as obstacles between NIU and first place.

In the top individual slots of the tournament are Joe Renger of Central Florida, carding a 143 (70-73); B.J. Dekreek of Georgia State, scoring a 146 (70-76), and Jerry Kelly of Hartford, with a 147 (71-76).
