UPs will hold auction at Huskie Stadium
March 31, 1988
Bicycles, watches, rings and calculators are among items to be auctioned off April 9 by the University Police in the Huskie Stadium.
The auction, in the stadium’s center lobby, include items turned in to the UPs as lost and found or items that have been confiscated by the department, UP Lt. Ronald Williams said.
The UPs are required by law to sell the items after six months if the owner cannot be found, Williams said.
Illinois Statute 144 states the items must be sold at a public auction for cash to the highest bidder, he said. UPs must make “reasonable efforts” to locate the owner before an item can be sold in an auction.
Items held by the UPs that have been identified but not picked up by their owner within a six month time limit will be auctioned, Williams said.
People can inspect the items to be auctioned beginning at 9 a.m. The auction starts at 10 a.m., Williams said.
Owners of any property can reclaim their property prior to the auction by providing satisfactory proof of ownership, Williams said.
The items identified at the time of the auction by the owners will be pulled off the auction line and held by the UPs until a bill of sale or other type of proof is shown, Williams said.
“All items, including bicycles, watches, calculators and rings offered at the auction will be sold as is,” Williams said. All sales are final and refunds will not be available, he said.
Rex Nelson of Kingston will be the auctioneer, Williams said.
Nelson said the items in the past UP auctions have included bicycles, calculators and umbrellas.
Any item not sold at the end of the auction will be held until the time of the next auction, Williams said.
Proceeds from the auction are deposited in the University Income Fund in Springfield, said Linda Timm, plant fund accountant. Expenses are paid for from the proceeds before the money is deposited, she said.
Williams said Persons working in the auction have been designated by his office.
