SA needs humor
March 25, 1988
I do not believe that the SA executive debates were an “embarrassment” or a “night at the circus.” One of the main issues at the debate was the lack of interest and attendance of the SA senators at meetings. I believe the main reason for this non-involvement and laxness of attitude may stem from the lifeless and uninteresting proceedings at SA meetings. As I see it, the student body and the SA senators are disenchanted with the humdrum and, frankly, boring leadership. I do not feel that the SA meetings should be a circus, or by any means a “joking matter,” I am merely saying that a touch of humor along with new, exciting ideas could have a positive impact on attendance, attention and attitude.
I feel that the one person who did spark the student body was SA presidential candidate, Dale Bradley. He did use a few moments of humor to generate audience attention and feedback and he also was interrupted by applause. Aside from the laughter, I believe that most of the students at the debate felt that Bradley’s campaign was sincere. I feel the Student Association needs a charismatic leader like Dale Bradley.
Also, in response to the negative comments directed toward Doug Moore (the moderator), I believe that his comments were not only appropriate, but served as a tension breaker for both the audience and the candidates, which is part of a moderator’s job.
