Lottery to attempt player base expansion
March 29, 1988
CHICAGO (AP)—Efforts to expand the Illinois Lottery’s player base—and state revenues—could include a new look for Lotto and a television game show that invites viewers to place bets by telephone.
More contests with instant winners and changes in big-money Lotto games are also in the works. And the mainstay Daily and Pick 4 games, being advertised for the first time in five years to show they’re easy to play, are drawing more revenue.
“The idea is to expand the player base,” said Lottery Director Sharon Sharp.
Lottery games took in more revenue last fiscal year than in any year since they began in 1974.
But the $1.33 billion in sales marked an increase of just 1.4 percent over the previous year. Profit for the state was $553 million in the last fiscal year, up from $551 million the previous year.
Projections for the current fiscal year, ending June 30, are for sales of $1.36 billion and a profit of $560 million. The Illinois Economic and Fiscal Commission, however, estimates the profit at $500 million.
The changes being considered are designed to woo young professionals, suburbanites and Illinoisans outside the Chicago area to play more, officials say.
