Voter registration drive draws 500 NIU students

More than 500 NIU students registered to vote during the Student Assosiation’s voter registration drive last week.

SA Sen. Joe Annunzio said even though the drive ended Feb. 4, students are still able to register today in the SA office, located on the second floor of the Holmes Student Center, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

More than 350 students registered Monday through Thursday at the two booths set up outside the Pow Wow Room and in DuSable Hall, Annunzio said.

He said First Ward Alderman Chris Hoagland convinced about 150 Greek Row students to register as well. Hoagland will continue her efforts to have Greek Row residents register in the SA office, he said.

Hoagland said students should vote in DeKalb rather than their home town because students have a large potential base for voting. She said those elected by students will be more willing to listen to students’ concerns and issues.

The primary elections are March 15, during NIU’s spring break.

For the first time the SA and the administration worked together to set up booths at add/drop this semester, SA President Jim Fischer said. However, because senators did not show up at the table the effort failed, he said.

After the semester break senators could not be reached to work the add/drop table because some phones were disconnected and students had not returned yet, Annunzio said.

“It (add/drop) did not go as well as we had hoped,” Fischer said.

Annunzio said because the SA and the administration were able to work together, more tables at add/drop can be set up in the summer, fall or spring.
