Committee to review three parking permit proposals
February 8, 1988
The Administrative Ad Hoc Parking Committee will meet at 8:30 a.m. today to address three parking proposals in order to make a recommendation to NIU President John LaTourette.
Ad Hoc Committee Member Henry Winsor stated in a report dated Jan. 31, three proposals have been made. Copies of the proposals were distributed and discussed briefly at the Feb. 1 meeting.
Blue permits are given to faculty and staff, green to graduate students, yellow to commuting students, orange to students living in the residence halls and brown are given to off-campus students.
According to Winsor’s report, Robert Bornheutter, chairman of Campus Parking Committee, said proposal one is a general consensus of members of NIU’s parking committees.
The proposal states all brown lots, except lot T, west of the physical plant, would be changed yellow or yellow/orange.
Street parking, south of Gabel Hall, calling for brown parking permits would be changed to yellow. Lot C, west of Garden Road, and lot E, east of the Chick Evan’s Field House, would be changed from yellow to blue.
Lot G, north of the Recreation Center accepting orange/yellow permits would be changed to accept only yellow permits while lot V, east of Anderson Hall, would be changed from brown/orange to yellow/orange permits.
Lot five, near the visitor’s lot, requiring blue permits would be changed to pay parking while lot D, west of Neptune Hall, taking orange permits would be changed to blue. Brown permit lot O, west of Annie Glidden road, would be changed to yellow/orange.
Proposals one and two are the same with “the exception being that lot five is not changed from staff to pay,” Winsor said. These “proposals are collections of ideas by various committees and committee members,” he said.
Proposal three would change all brown lots except lot T, west of the physical plant, to yellow or yellow/orange. Brown street-parking permits would be changed to yellow, also.
Proposal three was devised by Winsor and Dave Stern, Stern said. Stern is the co-chairman of the Student Association Parking Committee.
The administration is proposing to change student parking to faculty/staff and moving the student parking lots to remote locations on campus, Stern said.
“Hopefully proposal three will be recommended,” Stern said. He pointed out the committee had one student member and said, “The chances are not good (for proposal three to be recommended).”
