Unity week meeting to be held

Letters announcing a meeting concerning a second Unity Through Diversity Week were sent to student organizations.

The informational meeting will be held Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. in Holmes Student Center Room 305.

Gary Henderson, graduate assistant at the student affairs office, said the three acting co-chairmen of the Unity Through Diversity Week Committee are Larry Robertson, Jon Dalton and Laura Frankiewicz.

The meeting is open to the public to encourage involvement from the entire university, Dalton, vice president for student affairs, said.

“We want to make this a campus-wide program,” he said.

Interested people may sign up for various committees at the meeting, Dalton said.

Organized committees will be working on speakers, advertisements, finance and other committees, he said

The Campus Activities Board, the University Planning and Activities Board and campus ministries already have volunteered their services, Dalton said.

The committee chairmen are making “broad-based plans to get everyone involved,” he said.

Definite plans have not been made at this point, Dalton said. The poster contest, major events at noon in the King Memorial Commons and keynote speakers are among the activities that might be repeated, he said.

The committee chairmen hope to increase the involvement from the residence halls and the Greek Row area, Dalton said.

Unity Through Diversity Week is scheduled for Sept. 25 through Oct. 2.

Dalton attributed the success of the first week to the good weather conditions and the event occurring in early fall as the students were returning from summer break.

Events such as this bring NIU together, he said.

“Given the time and financial circumstances we were forced to deal with, the week went very well,” Stacey Dolby, assistant director of the housing service, said.

Dolby is anticipating a better “week” next semester, citing increased planning time and anticipated funding sources. He said he did not know of any funds at this time.

Dolby said he was “somewhat disappointed” in the level of student participation in some of the functions, given the amount of work that was put into them, he said.

The week is a good idea based on a good principle, William Fahler, a student committee member last semester, said.

The week hopefully will foster a “closer union between different races, nationalities and colors,” he said.
