UC to discuss board reduction

The University Council will discuss a proposal Wednesday to reduce the NIU Athletic Board from 34 to 20 members.

The UC Faculty Assembly recommended last week that the Athletic Board be cut in size to conform to national university standards.

Linda Sons, chairwoman of the assembly’s Rules and Governance Committee, said her committee found that of 27 universities surveyed the average athletic board was composed of 13 to 14 members.

Sons said her committee noticed a positive relationship between smaller board sizes and efficiency.

UC Executive Secretary Judy Bischoff said Athletic Board Chairman Curt Norton will speak at Wednesday’s meeting, representing the board’s concerns about the change.

Bischoff said Jeffrey Parness, chairman of the UC Elections Committee, will present the results of the faculty referendum concerning proposed university constitution changes.

NIU Faculty were asked to vote last week on a proposed set of constitutional revisions.

In other business, the council will discuss the possibilty of making The Northern Star a University-Related Organization.
