‘Pass the Buck’ airs complaints
February 1, 1988
“Pass the Buck,” a complaint box for students, allows them to make any complaints they have and get results.
Paula Radtke, Student Association public relations adviser, said the program is controlled by the public relations department and allows students to voice complaints about almost anything on campus.
Radtke said the idea is an advantage to students because it lets them voice their opinions.
SA Sen. Leslie Anderson said the complaints can be directed toward the campus, administration or any personal problem.
“Pass the Buck” boxes are located in the Student Recreation Center, the Bursar’s Office and Altgeld Hall, Radtke said. The department presently is trying to install a fourth box in the lower level of the Founders’ Memorial Library, she said.
Anderson said slips of paper are located beside the boxes asking students for their names and addresses and the complaint or complaints they would like to make.
The complaints are reviewed by the public relations department, usually Anderson and Radtke, and are directed toward the proper authorities, Anderson said.
She said the authorities, after reviewing the complaints, send letters of acknowledgement to the public relations department and to the people making the complaints.
Anderson said the process of sending the letters and getting responses usually takes less than one week. However, the time it takes for the problems to be resolved varies, she said.
Last semester the department resolved six or seven complaints. Several examples include the heating problem in Altgeld Hall, the fees for enrollment certification and questions about student employment, Anderson said.
She said the complaints will be picked up from the boxes and addressed to authorities monthly. She said complaints were picked up last semester from the boxes only twice because the key to the boxes was misplaced.
