Deserve coverage

A recent commentary in The Northern Star downplayed the need of club sports to receive coverage in our paper. The article said, “When a newspaper informs its readers that club sports exist, that’s a service.” Exactly.

Unfortunately, The Northern Star, itself produced by students, has not provided coverage of student-run clubs. The paper does not even inform readers when individual clubs are looking for new members.

NIU clubs, such as the Fencing Club, are both coached and administered by students who donate their time. These same students then attend budget meetings and watch with growing alarm as club budgets are repeatedly cut to shreds.

Is a little newspaper coverage too much to ask?

These clubs offer a variety of sports activities. The Fencing Club competes regularly with other Illinois clubs, and its members captured both first and second place in a recent tournament at the College of Lake County.

I’m sure other NIU clubs have similar accomplishments of their own and would like to receive adequate coverage. I hope you hear from them.
