Couple gives man another lease on life

PORTALES, N.M. (AP)—A homeless Chicago man offered a chance at a new life in rural New Mexico says he doesn’t mind the hard work or long hours his job requires.
Harold Thomas, 35, arrived in Portales Jan. 16 to work for Roy and Ethel Gilman. The couple had read an Associated Press story describing Thomas’ life in a makeshift shack on the Chicago River, and called the AP’s Chicago bureau to offer him a job as a ranch hand.
Since his arrival, Thomas has received cards and letters from people from across the country wishing him well in his new home and job. Twenty-eight fifth-graders from Corrales Elementary School near Albuquerque sent him greetings.
“I didn’t know there were so many caring people out there who are really concerned,” Thomas said Tuesday. “I’m learning that a lot of people in America really care and are trying to do something about the homeless.”
He said one letter-writer enclosed $5.
Thomas, who went to work almost immediately after his arrival in Portales, has done a variety of jobs, including fixing cars and helping load pipes, hay and lumber.
He said he likes the small eastern New Mexico community and has been welcomed by its residents.
“It’s real quiet,” he said. “It’s peaceful and the people seem to be real friendly. People are really helpful.”
