Judge to decide case’s status

By Nancy Broten

A DeKalb County circuit judge will decide at 1:30 this afternoon whether the case of Demetrius Glenn, 20, is ready for trial.

DeKalb Police charged Glenn with reckless homicide in connection with the Oct. 4 death of NIU student Christine Billmyer, 21.

Robert Carlson, Glenn’s attorney entered a plea of not guilty on behalf of Glenn Nov. 17.

The accident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. Oct. 4 at the corner of Lincoln Highway and Annie Glidden Road. Billmyer was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at the intersection when it was struck from behind by a vehicle allegedly driven by Glenn.

Glenn reportedly fled the scene and was later apprehended near the west end of Wendy’s parking lot, 1115 W. Lincoln Hwy.

Billmyer was taken to Kishwaukee Community Hospital and flown by helicopter to St. Anthony Medical Center, Rockford, where she died at 5 a.m.

Three other individuals were injured in the accident.

Glenn is charged with DUI, driving on a revoked license and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Larson said the charge of reckless homicide carries a sentence of two to five years in jail, with a one-year supervised release and a $10,000 fine.

DeKalb State’s Attorney Philip DiMarzio said the trial process can go through several stages including a preliminary hearing, discovery stage and status stage.

Glenn, Carlson and the prosecuting attorney will meet with Associate Circuit Judge Richard D. Larson in a status trial to determine each party’s readiness for trial.

DiMarzio said the trial might be delayed depending on whether Glenn asks for a continuance. Carlson could not reached for comment Sunday.
