Cultural currency
December 7, 1987
The Dec. 3 editorial has to be the best explanation of why we have general education course requirements that I have read. Indeed, there have been lots of letters printed in The Northern Star regarding the uselessness of gen. ed. courses. But, I have always understood that this is a university, and it should graduate people with universal knowledge.
By limiting your knowledge to a single field, you degrade your B.A. degree to the value of an associate degree. In today’s complex society, we need to know a little bit of a lot of things in order for our diploma to be a valuable piece of cultural currency.
