Bowling club on a roll
December 2, 1987
Generally, the major concern of those who join sports clubs at the collegiate level is just finding competition. However, one club at NIU, the bowling club, is involved in conference play—and still has trouble finding competition.
That is, finding teams that can compete with them.
The bowling club, which features intercollegiate competition in both men’s and women’s play, has a perfect record so far this season. Both the men’s and women’s squads own 6-0 records and are in first place in their respective Central Illinois Bowling Conference races.
With a leg up on winning the conference titles, the two teams are on the verge of qualifying for the sectional tournament next semester. Should they not win the conference, the teams can qualify by winning a major tournament.
Both teams are scheduled to participate in an invitational in Las Vegas Dec. 29-30. They also will have chances to qualify in January at an invitational in Oshkosh, Wis., and at the regional tournament at the University of Illinois.
But as of now, club members are looking to clinch the tournament bid by winning the conference. The schools they are competing with are Illinois, Western Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology.
In their most recent conference action, the teams swept a doubleheader from Illinois by the scores of 60-20 and 43-34. Mike Granberg led the men’s team with a five-game series of 1011. Jamie Dill’s 947 series sparked the women. Both had high games of 245.
Matt Memming and Tim Worland also had good outings for the men with 957 and 945 series respectively. Renee Hallwas (910), Lisa Larsen (897), Judy Genovese (891) and Liz Harseim (877) all performed admirably for the women.
Worland currently leads the men’s squad with a 194 average, while Genovese heads the women with a 179 average. Other team members are Bill Fricke, Scot Keith and Russ Paluch.
