Negative stories

This is in response to the Northern Star article Nov 30. by Jim Wozniak concerning an NIU athlete and what he called “terrorism.”

Our question is: Why must you dwell upon negative past events involving NIU athletes? On more than a few occasions you have attempted to destroy what our current coaching staffs have tried to build— a respectable athletic program.

One example of your “professional” journalism occurred this past summer in the Star’s orientation issue. You included several negative references to past incidents concerning players and coaches.

Nov. 30, you again tried to deface the name of NIU athletes by citing an incident concerning a current player that occurred over three-and-one-half years ago at another university.

We realize that you are reporting the facts as you interpret them. Sometimes, things are better left unsaid, especially when the facts have no pertinent value to the situation at hand. Why must you beat a dead horse? Your views are read daily by students and faculty. Careless journalism has no place at a university whose athletic program is “on the rise.”

The present coaching staffs have not only shown outstanding leadership and guidance but have also shown marked improvement and great potential.
