Women wet feet; 2nd in invitational

Women’s swimming coach Mike Burt wanted to see his squad get its feet wet by having it compete in the Colorado State University Early Bird Invitational over the weekend.

The Huskies responded with a second-place finish in the four-team invitational in CSU’s Moby Pool. Colorado State, swimming with a definite numbers advantage, tallied 1,196 points, followed by NIU, 599; Wyoming, 453; and Northern Colorado, 328.

“Overall, this was a good trip for us. We got to swim against some different people in different parts of the country. As far as conditioning goes, I think we’re right on track,” Burt said. “We had some good efforts, although the times didn’t always reflect that. The altitude did have an effect on us in the distance events.”

Sophomore Jenny Wendell and junior Sue Shaughnessy stood out for the Huskies. Wendell had a second-place and a third-place showing in the 100-yard individual medley and 200-yard freestyle, respectively. Shaughnessy won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.
