Gays part of NIU
November 4, 1987
I would like to respond to Mr. Nolan’s letter from the Oct. 22 Northern Star. Evidently he felt that the Gay/Lesbian Union’s participation in Unity Through Diversity Week was a disservice to the community.
I feel Mr. Nolan, despite his assertations, lost the meaning of this important week. He would be hard pressed to find a more diverse group than NIU’s GLU. Our organization consists of various races, majors, political affiliations, faculty, community members, as well as alumni. We are a support group. We educate our membership as well as those outside the homosexual community.
If Mr. Nolan had bothered to attend the activities sponsored entirely or in part by the GLU during Unity Through Diversity Week, he might not be under the impression we are trying to “convert” the general public, but rather to educate. We offered to address any questions or concerns at an open forum Sept. 29.
A large amount of research has been done on the possible causes of homosexuality. Perhaps Mr. Nolan should research this subject as opposed to relying on his personal opinions.
The point of Unity Through Diversity Week was to expose the community to the diverse groups that make up this university. Whether Mr. Nolan cares to accept it or not, the GLU is one of those diverse groups.
