Fraternity’s members get CPR training

For the second year in a row, the Lamda Chi Alpha fraternity is sponsoring a Cardiovascular Pulmonary Resuscitation training day Sunday.

At the completion of the three hour seminar, members of Lamda Chi who participate will receive CPR-Race for Life certification, Lamda Chi member Chris Houchins said.

Members of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity also will participate.

The seminar will focus on teaching CPR, mouth to mouth resuscitation and how to deal with a conscious and unconcious person, Houchins said. He said the program only covers techniques for adults.

ouchins said he will be the head instructor, and there will be several aids assisting him in the training.

Last year more than 50 people were certified, and this year Houchins said he believes the same number will receive certification.

Lamda Chi President Joe Simchak said, “(The seminar) is a chance for the guys in the house to learn how to save their roomate’s life or their parents’ lives.” He said it is a good opportunity for the fraternity to get together with other houses and perform a community service.

ouchins said CPR was chosen because those in attendance will learn a life-saving technique that can benefit DeKalb, Greek Row and NIU.

“The seminar is part of the President’s Award which is given to those greek organizations that have shown fraternal excellence,” Houchins said.

Part of the criteria for the award is house participation in an educational, non-alcoholic function with another fraternity, Houchins said.

Last year the house won two of the 10 special categories of the award partially because of the CPR seminar, Houchins said. The awards were “outstanding greek relations” and “outstanding community service,” he said.

The University Programming and Activities’ greek adviser was invited to attend the seminar along with several Lamda Chi alumni and several faculty members, Houchins said.
