Committee eyes parking lot move

The Parking Committee has suggested moving student parking to the outer perimeters of campus as a possible solution to parking problems.

The committee last week recommended a possible parking solution including finding an area where more spaces could be constructed and re-allocating parking sticker colors which would move student parking to the outer perimeters of campus.

Plans to move student parking include expanding Lot P, west of Stevenson Towers South, and Lot O, north of the residence halls on Annie Glidden Road, said Bob Lane, parking committee member.

A re-allocation of parking sticker colors to these lots would push students out. Committee member Larry Sill said this would not take away students’ parking rights because no one is guaranteed a space close to campus.

In addition, the committee suggested the field south of Gable Hall could be converted to contain about 200 parking spaces, Lane said.

Lane said it is unknown at this time how much of the field would have to be allotted for construction to provide for the parking spaces.

Sill said if a lot is purchased, it might be necessary to convert the local parking account to a bond revenue based account. All existing lots would be bond revenue as well, he said.

Bond revenue lots possibly could triple or quadruple the cost of parking permits. However, he said the higher cost is not unreasonable considering what other campuses pay for parking.

Eddie Williams, vice president for finance and planning, said at this point all plans are only possibilities. He said the parking committee is only trying to identify all of the options and evaluate them.

It is premature to talk about funding because nothing has been established, Williams said. The process needs some time to work, he said.
