Not the boss
November 20, 1987
I’d like to thank you for running an article publicizing Lucien Stryk’s poetry reading. Mr. Stryk is an extraordinary writer, teacher and scholar and anyone who cares about poetry—certainly, anyone who tries to write it—ought to come hear a man whose work has won him no small fame throughout the world.
Your reporter, though, promoted me to a job I don’t have. Dr. F. Marion Miller directs NIU’s Honors Program, Dr. James Marett is the assistant director and I’m called the program coordinator. Dr. Miller will be lecturing in China for the next couple of weeks about his research in stereochemistry. I wouldn’t want him to think I’ve staged a coup while he was out of the country. As far as I know, Dr. Miller’s still my boss.
