Unfair indignity

The Sept. 1, edition of the Northern Star contained a column by Jeff Kirik entitled, “1987-88 might be another year of question marks for Huskie athletic department under reconstruction.” In the article, Mr. Kirik commented on the work of the committees established to review intercollegiate athletics, noted that both Chuck Shriver and John McDougal had left their positions in the athletic department and stated the following related thereto: “Incidentally, this might have helped the NIU athletic department because both McDougal and Shriver had been given unfavorable reports from the committees.”

A careful reading of the reports of the External and Internal Review Committees will show that the former made no mention of either Mr. Shriver or Mr. McDougal, and the latter did refer to the performance of Mr. Shriver as it was perceived by those who commented on it during the review process. Rather than an unfavorable report, however, it was a recognition by the committee of the confusion which existed as to what he was expected to do.

Nowhere in the report does the name of John McDougal appear. It follows, therefore, that the committee had not given him an unfavorable report.

Mr. McDougal showed himself to be an exemplary coach and a highly respected, extraordinary gentleman as he served the department of intercollegiate athletics and NIU. He should not be subjected to this kind of indignity resulting from inaccurate reporting.
