Disappointment felt

Thursday, Feb. 19, Ambassador Designate to Burma Mr. Burton Levine presented his views on the future of Hong Kong post-1997 when the People’s Republic of China will assume political control. Those who attended were treated to a well-articulated and informative perspective from an individual who has spent 35 years close to the policies of East and Southeast Asia. Seldom do we have the opportunity to hear such an authoritative view.

I wish to express two disappointments. First, only a few students who were not required to be there attended. Where were the PRC students? Where were the Hong Kong students? Where were the international relations students? Where were the Southeast Asia minor students? And perhaps most important, where were the American students who may not be associated with one of the above? Out of more than 20,000 students I would have expected a few to be interested.

My second disappointment was that once again the Star did not cover a major speaker except for a photograph on page five of Friday’s edition. One beer ad and two pizza ads on the same page received five times the space. Perhaps therein is the answer to both my disappointments.
