NIU men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed against Western Illinois University before a parents’ day crowd Saturday at the Anderson Hall Pool.

The women Huskies prevailed by beating WIU 123-88, while the men lost 120-90.

The women’s team improved its record to 4-2. Jenny Wendell and Beth Mendike took the two top spots in the 100-meter freestyle. Lynette Zeitz also captured a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly.

“A win’s a win,” said women’s coach Mike Burt. “We’re 4-2 right now. I still want them to be more aggressive in their approach to the races and to have more confidence. It’s my belief that they (the swimmers) are better than they think.”

Even though men’s coach Dave Clark is unhappy with Saturday’s loss, he said he is not disappointed in his team overall.

“It was the worst meet we’ve swam in two weeks,” Clark said. “Then again, it is the fifth meet in eight days. We are at the time in the season where we’re dead tired.”

Andy Flodin, Dave Talbot and Mike Godsted placed first, second and third respectively in the 200-yard butterfly.

The men’s team won 131-75 Friday night over Loyola.

“It’s kind of hard,” Clark said. “We’ve had fast swims, but we have one here and one there. It hasn’t been consistent.”

In men’s diving, Eric Hasman recently set a school record of 506.40. Hasman has qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Qualifications March 13 and 14 at Champaign, Il., where he will try for Nationals.
