Wait, who are these players?

While listening to the Huskies playing basketball against perennial Division I powerhouse, the University of Toledo, a question flashed through my brain. Where were the magnificent seven? It seemed odd. The players’ names being called by the announcers were not familiar at all. Strange. Who were these lads Grabner, Hardy and Sullivan? I’d never heard of them.

Perhaps since going independent Division I, they came from the basketball-rich playgrounds and poorly-lit gyms of the south and west sides of Chicago? Nah! These were white kids from faraway places like Appleton, Wis. and Clinton, Iowa.

But where were the infamous seven? Where were the likes of Battle, Edmondson, Dennis Douglas, Bob Russ, Jerry Williams, Daron White and last, but certainly not least, Willie White? Had they been abducted by a UFO?

Okay, I know Kenny Battle is a survivor and will provide many great thrills for the Fighting Illini and their fans who avidly follow their team.

But what about the rest? I’m sure that at this very moment they’re over at Bob Brigham’s house, probably in the den, studying philosophy, statistics, tumbling and their other rigorous courses. I wish them well, because college is an unforgettable experience.

In closing, I urge all students to support the Huskies, because they do have a fine head coach. Let’s just hope he gets some players.
