Attending Huskie sporting events important for programs’ success

By Maddie Barrett

DeKALB — The fans’ support, the food and the entertainment are all key reasons to attend games.

Attending games gives you the opportunity to meet people, eat snacks, tailgate and cheer on our Huskies.

We have competitive athletic programs at NIU. Our teams compete in the Mid-American Conference. Our conference opponents vary by sport, but that does not make it any less challenging.

Our teams are made up of a diverse student athlete body that represents every corner of the U.S. and several countries.

Our football team is the reigning MAC champion, and they’re looking to keep their crown.

The Huskies are a five-time MAC champion adding six MAC West divisional championships since 2011.

The volleyball team is coming off a 11-21 but have developed a winning identity with seven winning season since 2010.

Men’s soccer is in the third season of the Head Coach Ryan Swan era and has made progress since his first season.

The Huskies closed out the 2018 season with eight victories, a five match jump from 2017. Under Swan, the Huskies put up four home victories which ties a season high since 2015.

Women’s soccer Head Coach Julie Colhoff is in her second year at the helm of the women’s soccer program. Colhoff’s team finished the 2018 season with a 2-17 record with both victories coming at home.

Cross Country will have a home team advantage as the team is set to host the 2019 MAC Championships. The Huskies finished fourth place at last year’s conference championships.

All regular season games are free to students, opening an opportunity to support your team and stand together as one community cheering on our athletes.
