DeKalb community organizations will be holding a rally 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Memorial Park, 101 Lincoln Highway, as part of the broader Lights for Liberty movement against the treatment of immigrants at the southern border.

This Friday, national and international communities will gather in their locales for a candlelight vigil.

DeKalb’s event was organized by Cynthia de Seife, coordinator for Responsive Engagement Activating Civic Talent, a subgroup of DeKalb Stands.

The event will begin with music and art. Seife said folk singer Joe Jencks will play at the event. Attendees are encouraged to contribute to a community mural.

“Lots of times when something awful is happening, people don’t know what to do with their emotions,” she said. “[The mural] opens up the possibility for each person to begin to participate in the activity.”

Seife invited six speakers for the event: Dave Becker of Welcoming Western Counties, Joe Mitchell, pastor at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Beatrix Hoffman, NIU professor of history, Linda Slavon and Tony Tollarud of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of DeKalb, Tania Bonilla, presenting research on mothers at the border, and Joe Gastiger, minister at First Congregational United Church of Christ.
