The Track and Field team competes Friday in the annual NIU Classic at the Track and Field Complex.

Head Coach Connie Teaberry said the NIU Classic a big meet that the team has been looking forward to.

“[The meet] is very exciting,” Teaberry said. “We get that one time for family and friends to come out and see us compete. That always gives the girls extra energy when they’re trying to perform.”

Among the athletes competing will be Junior multi-event runner Remy Amarteifio who recently ran her season best of 12.01 seconds in the 100 meter dash, and junior sprinter Britney Hew who ran a season best with time of 11.92 seconds in the same race, the 10th fastest time in the MAC this season.

Also competing is first-year Taylor Ramsey. She achieved her MAC-qualifying mark in the high jump with her 1.70 meter performance, placing second at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational. Ramsey also took second in the high jump at the Black and Gold Invitational, clearing 1.68 meters.

Senior jumper Jehvania Whyte was selected as the 2018 MAC Indoor Championships Most Outstanding Field Performer, the 2018 NCAA Indoor Triple Jump All-American and 2018 NCAA Outdoor Triple Jump All-American.

Whyte also became the MAC triple jump indoor champion in February with a jump of 12.96 meters. Whyte has completed a lot in the past four years and said she is ready for the meet.

“It hasn’t quite hit me yet that it will be the last time competing at home,” Whyte said. “It’s saddening but all I can think about going into this weekend is of how grateful I am for NIU Athletics, my coach and my teammates.”

The meet is all day Friday at the NIU Soccer and Track and Field facility across from the baseball and football field.
